Join our educational webinar on FLASH particle therapy
Terapet SA is pleased to invite you to a new educational webinar focused on one of the most exciting and challenging frontiers in particle therapy: the FLASH effect.
This session will provide a clear and structured overview of the physical, dosimetric and biological mechanisms underpinning ultra-high dose-rate (UHDR) irradiation, with a particular emphasis on particle therapy.
Leading experts in the field will share insights from Monte Carlo modelling, dosimetry, radiochemistry and biological response, highlighting both current knowledge and open challenges for clinical translation.
Speaker
Dr. Andrea Mairani
Scientific Director, Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT)
Chair and Heisenberg Professor, Translational Medical Physics in Particle Therapy
Andrea Mairani is a leading expert in medical physics and particle therapy, with extensive experience spanning nuclear physics, Monte Carlo modelling, dosimetry and biological modelling for advanced radiation treatments.
He has held key scientific roles at CNAO (Pavia) and later at the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT), where he has led research groups across HIT, NCT and DKFZ. Since April 2025, he serves as Scientific Director of HIT, and from January 2026 he holds the Chair and Heisenberg Professorship in Translational Medical Physics in Particle Therapy.
Speaker
Dr. Kilian Baumann
Medical Physics Expert, Marburg Ion-Beam Therapy Center
Substitute Professor, University of Applied Sciences Giessen
Kilian Baumann is a medical physicist and researcher specializing in particle therapy, dosimetry, Monte Carlo simulations and radiochemistry at ultra-high dose rates. He has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Applied Sciences Giessen and the University of Marburg, while also serving as a Medical Physics Expert at the Marburg Ion-Beam Therapy Center. Since May 2025, he holds a substitute professorship at the University of Applied Sciences Giessen.
He leads a multidisciplinary research group comprising postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and students, focusing on particle therapy physics, dosimetry, cellular-scale Monte Carlo simulations and radiation-induced radiochemistry.
The webinar will cover:
A brief introduction to the FLASH effect and ultra-high dose rate particle therapy
The current biological and clinical challenges in FLASH radiotherapy
Monte Carlo simulations and radiochemical modelling at cellular scale
Experimental dosimetry methods and detector requirements for ION-FLASH
The role of oxygen depletion and radical interactions in the FLASH mechanism
Future perspectives towards clinical translation, treatment planning and in vivo verification
